Can We Walk to the Moon? By Mark Dorey

This is the second of my reviews of children’s books written by local authors for World Book Day 2025. You can read the first here https://talkingyorkie.wales/?p=79

Can We Walk to the Moon? is the first of two beautifully illustrated, colour picture books for young children. Through delicious rhyming verse, the story traces the magical adventure of Thomas and his Dad which started with Tom asking the question, “Can we walk to the moon, Dad?” With each brightly coloured page and buoyant text, we learn how Tom and his Dad plan and then walk to the moon. Once arrived, there are many surprises on the moon to excite the imagination. I found the ending to be very satisfying and, being a parent and now a grandparent, it left a warm glow in my heart.

The inspiration for this story came from a conversation with the author, Mark, and his son Tom, when Tom was a little boy. I am looking forward to reading Can We Walk to the Moon? to our little grandson when we see him (and his mummy and daddy) in a couple of weeks. I think it is likely that it will soon become a favourite bedtime story for him for a long time.

About the author: Mark has been writing for children for more than 30 years. He has written many books for children of all ages. Mark’s wife Liz, is the gifted illustrator of Mark’s books.

  1. Thanks Sharon for a wonderful and thoughtful review of what was our first published book. The book itself holds many treasured memories for me, including showcasing Liz’s illustrating talent, which she never realised she had until she started illustrating our books 😀 Thanks again!
